Relay for Life

Hundreds of walkers and well wishers took over the Grundy Center High School track Friday night, all to raise money for a cause. For the fourth consecutive year, the Grundy County Relay for Life was held in Grundy Center, featuring music, auctions and stories of those touched by cancer. Hillary Samo and her family (top) were the banner carriers for this year’s Survivor and Caregiver Family. Prior to the ceremonial lap around the track, Samo’s story of discovering her cancer less than a year ago and her recovery since was told through her mother’s eyes.

Empty hallways all that remain for VanderPol

GRUNDY CENTER — Steve VanderPol wandered into the hall outside his office Thursday morning. Gone were the sounds of students walking between classes, talking about their date the previous Saturday and why the B-minus they received on their algebra test was so unfair. There was no sound of lockers and no smell of lunch wafting from the cafeteria.
Nineteen years as principal at Grundy Center Junior-Senior High School was enough. More than three decades teaching and serving in school administration was enough. All that was left were memories.
